Warwick Board of Health News

Thanks for the input that some of you have given us on ways to make the transfer station more efficient. We do listen to your suggestions! We feel like we are getting a good handle on the bagged waste at the landfill.

Please remember that you may only use Warwick bags after Jan. 1, 2011. This decision was made in 2009 and publicized in the newsletter as well as being mentioned again at the annual town meeting. From this time forward, you can only purchase stickers at the landfill! Even with this advance warning, if you bought too many stickers you can exchange them for Warwick trash bags (1 for 1) as long as you do it a BOH meeting in November or December. Our meetings will be the first and third Wednesday of these two months at the Warwick town Hall at 7 p.m. We will put sticker exchanges on the agenda for those evenings.

Hopefully access to the compactors is getting to be a little easier. We have rented another compactor with rental fees going toward its purchase. If we compact more, we can send fewer loads or send 2 loads at a time to the regional landfill - this will save us money!

We have purchased ( as opposed to renting) a sani-can for the landfill area and are investigating having a new shed, which will allow the transfer station a larger viewing area, built by the Franklin County Tech school students. We will keep you updated on this event!

We are now turning towards a more efficient method for disposing of bulky wastes. After researching area towns, we have come up with a new schedule which measures bulky wastes in terms of cubic yards. This will make it easier for both you and the transfer agent to price these items. We are attaching a proposed fee schedule for your input prior to a BOH vote. Your input should be in writing (delivered to BOH mailbox in the town hall) or by email to boh@town.warwick.ma.us . We will be reviewing any suggestions at our August 25th meeting.

We'd like to welcome our new transfer station attendant, George Roaf. He has been doing an outstanding job. In two weeks, George has determined that three people have been dumping illegally. One was a case of dumping without paying fees, one is still being investigated and one was accidental. It is important that everyone pay their fair share if they are using the transfer station. We operate this as an enterprise fund and if we cannot break even, we will need to return to the town at town meeting and ask for additional funding. If everyone pays their share it will make it easier for us to operate the transfer station as a break-even enterprise.

The Board voted the following policy to help George do his job. 1) First offense - you will be forgiven when proper fees are paid. 2) Second offense - you must report to the attendant before leaving anything anytime you come to the transfer station. 3) Third offense - you are banned from the landfill and if you come, you will be charged with "theft of service".

And speaking of the transfer station - let's all be considerate of one another. Do not park in front of a container and stop to visit with other townspeople. If you need stickers, get them before you park in front of the containers. We certainly encourage your conversations at the landfill - just park your vehicle in a spot where it doesn't obstruct other users.

Remember - stickers can only be used until Dec 31, 2010. After that, only Town of Warwick trash bags will be accepted. We are considering re-instituting a vehicle sticker for entrance to the transfer station in order to try to break even at the transfer station.

All calls to the BOH should go through the town hall. Our number is 978 544-6315. Our secretary, Linda Smith, will see that your concerns are put on our agenda. If you need an inspection, we will make every effort to coordinate these inspections at a mutually convenient time. We have voted to have the transfer station open during the summer months of July and August during Wednesday evening from 5-8 PM. Our final Wednesday at the transfer station will be the Wednesday after Labor Day.

Trash Bags

Town of Warwick trash bags and stickers will now be $2.50 for Bags and $3.00 for stickers, when purchased at Town Hall, the Warwick Library and Kulicks Supermarket.

The cost of purchasing bags and stickers from the Warwick Transfer Station will increase to $3.00 for Bags and $3.50 for Stickers. Please pay by check. This will go into effect Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Mattresses and box springs are now $40.00.

As always, we will take your recyclables FREE of charge.
